TutorZ Trademark Accepted TutorZ owns a trademark on its logo issued by the Unites States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). To be exact it is service mark. Service marks differ from trademarks as they are used on the advertising of the service rather than on the packaging or delivery of the service, since there is generally no package to place the mark on. The mark was issued in 2008. Here is our trademark: Patent and trademark laws require a renewal after 5 years. We started this process in 2013. The renewal process was perhaps hardener than the initial trademark application. We made technical mistakes such as changing the owner of the trade mark from TutorZ to Dirk Wagner the owner of TutorZ LLC. This required a re-submission of the renewal request. Each mistake costs another $100 in fees to the USPTO. Eventually, we found it easier to get legal help from the trademark experts Lee Associated in Ann Arbor, MI. I was thinking of places Ive never been in California and Stanford went through my mind, and I decided to take a look at the city of Stanford, not the University of Stanford. Well, as it turns out there is no city of Stanford; rather it is an unincorporated area of Santa Clara County adjacent to the city of Palo Alto.   Stanford has its own post office and two zip codes, one for buildings on campus and another for post office boxes. It even has its own shopping center and medical center along with a very nice residential neighborhood. The main tourist attraction to this non city of Stanford, other than the University, is the   Dish.  It weighs 300,000 pounds and rotates on a circular railway track.   It was placed on a beautiful area of rolling hills with views on a clear day that extends to San Jose, San Francisco, and the East Bay. The Dish was originally funded to be built for the U.S. Air Force at around $4.5 million, in 1966. The purpose at that time was to studying the chemical composition of the atmosphere. However, it turns out that it became very useful in communication with satellites and spacecraft.   In fact it was used to transmit signals to all of the Voyager craft that NASA dispatched into the outer reaches of the solar system. Federal Education Spending Fails To Prevent Dropping Skill Levels and Wage Gap While the Federal Department of Education spends huge amounts of dollars in the national education in failed to prevent a drop in skill levels and a widening of the wage gap. In 2014, the Federal Education spending totaled a whopping $140 billion, which is a 12% of the entire federal budget or 6% of our national income (GDP). Given this substantial investment, the question is how much progress has been made in education? In this article we like to measure this progress in education against the 2007 article Americas Perfect Storm released by the Education Testing Service (ETS). This company tested the aptitudes of millions of Americans by means of the the SAT, GRE, AP and TOEFL standardized test. In the article, the ETS identified three main challenges that would shape the knowledge-based jobs in the US and with it our ability to compete in the global economy. These three challenges are: 1. Drop in skill levels, especially in reading and math. 2. A widening of the wage gap. 3. Demographic shifts, that is less education. 1. Disparities in Skill Levels In a study conducted by the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) and the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) test scores between American, Canadian, Chinese and Korean students was compared in the time frame from 2003 to 2012. The test scores of Chinese and Korean students increased from an normalized store of 550 to 561 and 542 to 552, respectively. In the same interval test scores of American students declined from 483 to 481. See picture below. This alarming result poses a clear threat to the US because it has the highest inequality gap in skills, especially in math and reading and â€" that is, across US student and adult populations, the gap between our most and our least proficient is the highest of any of the OECD countries. The ETS report names three factors that might have caused this skill drop. A prolonged recession, rising automation and competition from overseas. 2. Widening of the Wage Gap Today an estimated 48% American college grads work in work in jobs that did not require a college degree. Back in 2000, the ETS expected 66% of all job growth to come from college jobs. Today it is the non-college jobs which account for the major part of employment growth of Americans. The unemployment and underemployment rates are a part of the ETS report. In 2014, the unemployment rate was 8.5% of recent college grads and the underemployment rate skyrocketed to a 16.8%. In comparison these numbers were 5.1% and 10.5% back in 1995, respectively. The Americas Perfect Storm publication blames the technology and outsourcing for this trend. Me as a part-time economist would add that skyrocketing debt, legal hazard and a entitlement thinking significantly contribute to the ongoing loss of our competitiveness. 3. Demographic Shifts The good news is that the US population is expected to grow 20% until 2030. In comparison, the populations of Europe and Eastern Europe are stagnating or shrinking. However, earlier population growth was fueled by a positive birth rate of Americans (larger than 2.1 children per couple). The future population growth mainly comes from the immigration of Hispanics. Often thely lack high-school diplomas and many do not speak English well or at all. How will they fare in the US workforce? While it is that investment in education is a primary driver in the US economy. However, this substantial investment has failed to yield the expected results. Our US economy is loosing ground against overseas competition. A former president Ronald Reagan once said. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead. I personally share the optimistic sentiment of this quote. Why? Because Americas bright entrepreneurs will find solutions to this crisis in education. Guitar teacher  Samuel B.  shares three things every guitarist should know about writing a song on guitar As a teacher, having you develop the ability to express yourself is my number one goal. Playing guitar solos is one form of personal expression. Writing songs is another. If youve never written a song, you might think of songwriting as something that only a few special people can do. In reality, nothing is further from the truth. Anyone Can Write a Song During an 1990s interview in Performing Songwriter Magazine, John Mellencamp was asked whether or not songwriting is something that comes naturally to him. His response was “I think everyones a songwriter.” He compared songwriting to shooting baskets and hitting baseballs. There are, of course, people with greater abilities than others, but he made it clear that songwriting is not something that only five people in the world can do. Lionel Ritchie once slapped his hand rhythmically on the arm of a chair in response to a very similar question. “All of you who can hear a song or a melody playing in your head right now,” he said. “Youre a songwriter.” Songwriting requires no special training or qualifications â€" only the ability to hear music and the desire to create it. Although I teach soloing only at a set point in the curriculum (after youve learned chords in the keys of C, D, and E), songwriting skills can be taught at any time. Most American Songs Are All Loosely Based On The Same Three Chords E, A, and B7th are as basic to the key of E as D, G, and A7th are to D, and C, F, and G7th are to C. These are three examples of the I-IV-V chord progression which can be heard in campfire songs, gospel, contemporary country, rock, folk, and (of course) the blues. The pattern gets its name from the fact that C is the first note of the C scale (just as F is the 4th and G is the 5th). Although youll want to make variations in each song (such as the amount of time you play each chord), youll be surprised how many options three chords will provide you. You may decide to write a song with verses and choruses only (ie “This Land Is Your Land”). You may decide to add a bridge (which you will play only once). You may decide to include verses and a bridge only. Whatever your preference, you will likely want to include a minor chord somewhere in the mix for varietys sake. Am is the appropriate choice for a song in the key of C (just as Bm is for a song in the key of D and Cm is for one in E). Bridges Are Often Structurally Simpler Than Verses And Choruses One song I teach thats become a favorite of at least one student is Bob Dylans “Man In The Long Black Coat.” The entire song involves four chords (Em, G, D, and C), includes verses and a bridge only, and involves fewer chord changes during the bridge than the verses. The Em, G, and D progression is repeated four times during a verse before a full measure of C interrupts the flow. The verse concludes with one final round of the Em, G, and D sequence. The bridge, however, begins with a full measure of C. Its second measure involves two strums of D and two strums of Em before another full of measure of C is played. Just like in the verses, the bridge concludes with a single go-around of the opening sequence (Em, G, and D). You might think of the bridge as the songs chance to “air out.” For the musician, its actually a more relaxing part of the song as it tends to be where both the tempo and the rate of chord changes decrease. Although these are all important guidelines for how to get started, you may find that your compositional preferences involve more (or fewer) chords than those Ive recommended. You might become absorbed in an elaborate picking pattern that requires fewer than three chords. You might branch out into jazz a bit and want to embellish a four-chord song with some additional variants (ie minor seventh, ninth, augmented, and/or diminished chords). I have been a professional actor-singer all my life, it seems.   When I was studying theatre at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County many moons agowe had no voice training as actors.   We were often told I cant hear you or Project! or I cant understand what youre saying.   But that was the extent of our training. Unfortunately, we had to figure out what to do with those criticisms.   I did, however, take singing lessons by a very fine instructor during my university days.   I learned how to use my voice very effectivelyas a singer, and occasionally found myself observing that my speaking voice was receiving some benefit from that singing training, too, but I didnt know quite how. It wasnt until I went to graduate school at the Dallas Theater Center that something revolutionary happened to my voice and my attitude towards my use of itboth as a speaker and a singer.   What I discovered was that the focus and resonance I had learned as a singer was no different that what was needed for an effective speaking voice as well. I discovered that the difference between singing and speaking is one of dynamic rangethe highs and lows, the sustention of notes beyond what would be considered as speaking is more extravagant, but the training should be the same.   The instrument being used is the same, the most intimate instrument that we play, because it is produced solely from within.   If we begin to think of our speaking and singing voices as one and the same, we can apply all the rich, focused vibrations we learn to produce while singing directly to our speaking voice. Breath does not control the tonal quality of the speaking/singing voicethat is produced by working as if were not using any breath at all. Of course, we need a constant supply of breath to create the vibration of the vocal folds, but after that breath stream becomes a sound stream, its up to resonance and wave reflection to take over.   The sound is conducted through the bones of the face and head.   So, when we learn to focus that sound stream onto the hard palate, and upwards into the nasal bone, forehead and craniumwe produce a beautiful unforced resonant qualityespecially when we also create a more generous open cavity in the mouth. So whats to stop us from speaking the way we sing?   Try this experiment:   Create your own little melody in your mid-range for this phrase: This is the way to feel the focus.   Focus your voice (by thinking it there!) onto the hard palate as you do this rather slowly.   Then speak the line while maintaining that feel of the vibration on your hard palate, sailing up into your head (hopefully). Dont you enjoy that placement, that richness of tone?   It can be yours for the askingwhen you have the feel of singing while you speak! So, dont be satisfied with a singing voice that works one wayand a speaking voice that is lodged in the back of your throat, raspy, or of another sort of poor quality.   Lets not leave the speaking voice out of the quality equation.
